Soda Pop Ice Cream

We were recently introduced to soda pop ice cream and love how easy and affordable it is to make. You basically just choose your favorite soda, add a can of sweetened condensed milk, throw it in an ice cream maker, turn it on and 30 minutes later you have a creamy blend of deliciousness. The variations are endless, we did Sunkist for a dreamsickle taste and next were going to try Big Red.

This is seriously fool proof. The hardest things about this recipe is keeping your husband from drinking the Soda before your ready to make it.

2 Liter Soda & 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk

Pour the soda in first and then the SCM.

Yummy!

* You can also use fat free SCM.

  2. Do you know if you can use a sugar-free soda for lower-calories? Or is the sugar essential to making the ice-cream?

    1. I don't think that sugar free soda will freeze.

    2. I use sugar free or Big Red Zero and also make it with home made Sweetened Cond. Milk - make it with Stevia works great!

  5. I used rock salt. It did not work. I tried root beer and fat free sweetened condensed milk. Are you sure it works with all soda and/or fat free sweetened condensed milk? I was supper excited and tried a few variations and it did not work for me.

  6. Worked for me. I didn't care for the sunkist flavor because if you've ever had an MRI and had to drink that junk, it tastes just like it. We are going to try rootbeer next. We used regular sweetened condensed milk.

  8. I just made it with Fanta Orange soda and regular sweetened condensed milk. The kids and I just loved it! I just layered the ice with rock salt for about 5 times. About 45 minutes later in the electric ice cream maker we had a great dessert. Thanks so much for the recipe!

  9. I have a 2qt cuisinart electric ICM and I wasn't able to use the full ammount of soda & SCM, I had to just pour soda till ICM was almost full then add SCM. I used probably 2/3 of each ingreedient. Family loved it! we used Crush soda because last time I checked sunkist had caffine.

  11. I'm trying it with ginger ale and half and half... I'm used to making vanilla with half and half and I have no SCM. Maybe it'll work maybe it wont. I added some sugar to it because im using half & half. If it doesn't work at the very least we can drink it! Its so yummy!

  12. Tried this recipe as my first one in my new kitchenaid ice cream maker attachment. Even though I had left the bowl in the freezer over 24 hours, I think my Florida apartment was just too warm. After 30 minutes all I had was cold milky soda. I have put the mixture in the freezer in a shallow container hoping that it will still turn out. Perhaps I needed to put the ingredients in the refridgerator over night as well?

  13. I tasted the Coke and Orange Kist viariations last week at a cookout. I couldnt believe there were only two ingredients involved! It was good! It's not like homemade ice cream but tasty and refreshing. So last night, I tried it in a Cuisinart Frozen Yogurt, Ice Cream-Sorbet Maker (no ice or rock salt needed). I mixed 2 cans of SCM to @ chilled liter of Barq's Rootbeer. I mixed it together in a large mixing bowl and poured half of the mixture into the ice cream maker and the other half back into the empty rootbeer bottle to freeze later. The mixture froze nicely but was a little soft so I put it in the freezer overnight. Now it has hardened but is easy to scoop. I served it in small frosted mugs with a splash of half and half! Yummy!

  14. My mother used this recipe with Orange Crush back in the 1950's. I have made it with grape soda and no fruit. YUM. The rock salt is important with the bucket style freezer, the more you use, the harder the freeze. Thanks for reminding me of my childhood. Think I'll make it for our pinterest cook-off at work.

  15. The most expensive part of the recipe is the rock salt and ice if you have to buy it. I always recycle my salt water by putting it in a large bowl and placing it in the freezer. I can sometimes use it 3 times before I need to replace it. It makes the freezing process quicker, easier, and cheaper. I also freeze my soda and SCM until it is slushie before starting. That way I don't have to spend as much time watching it. We have used this basic recipe for years. I also like strawberry soda this way. Stick to name brands. They freeze the best.

  16. I've made this before as well, and have been trying to find the recipe again, thanks!!

For those having trouble getting it to freeze:
It helps to have your ingredients as cold as possible before putting it in the mixer-like the previous poster does. If it is hot outside, run the machine in an air-conditioned area. I've made regular ice cream that didn't freeze because it was too hot. It helps to replace at least some of your ice and re-salt it if the ice gets too melted before the ice cream is done. I have one of the frozen-bowl type ice cream makers as well as a salt/ice ice cream maker, and the bowl works fine but you HAVE to chill the ingredients or the bowl gets too warm and it won't work.

  18. Worked nicely in my Cuisinart automatic frozen yogurt-ice cream maker. Grand kids loved it!

  19. I just made this in my Cuisinart. I have two bowls for it and had to change out for a cold bowl in the middle of churning. After I exchanged bowls it only took about 10 min to finish. It was wonderful "ice cream" I made it with mountain dew.

  20. I made this tonight in my Hamilton Beach Ice Cream Maker. It took 1 1/2 hours to freeze. It melts fast. I noticed it started melting as soon as my spoon touched it. It's not creamy like ice cream. It's more like a milky type slushie/icee. I made mine with Raspberry Cream Shasta. Texture okay. Flavor Fabulous!!!

  21. You can make a frosty, also. That takes 1/2 gal chocolate milk, 1 can sweet condensed milk and 8 oz cool whip. Mix and freeze. It's really good.
